This second dorodango is made from soil taken from my sister’s home and was presented in celebration of her becoming a homeowner. The results are arguably better than with the first dorodango but I had tremendous difficulty with the roundness and surface quality of this piece. In a final effort to save what I thought was a lost cause I created a thin mud shell and wrapped the ailing ball. The shell adhered poorly to the core so I ended up removing it after about twenty minutes. Interestingly, the failure of the shell worked in my favor by evenly moisturizing the outer few millimeters of the core. With this even layer at its surface, the core became much easier to work into a finished shape and shine.
